Hello, Hello Lake Tahoe

As a San Diegan, I heard about the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe my whole life. Although friends raved about ski weekends and summer getaways, somehow I had never made the Tahoe pilgrimage.

During the last week of June, I had the chance to swim in the lake for the first time! The drive up to Tahoe’s 7000+ elevation was stunning and I couldn’t wait to see the lake. I was so excited as we got closer — I even mistook a blue roof in the distance for the lake in the sharp afternoon sun.

A few minutes later, we rounded a corner and I got my first actual glimpse of Lake Tahoe surrounded by snowcapped mountains. I quickly realize two things:

  1. Lake Tahoe is one of those places that really is as beautiful as its reputation. The many photos I’ve seen hadn’t done justice to its majestic state. Nevertheless, this didn’t dissuade me from trying to capture its natural beauty on camera (see below).

  2. The fact that there was still snow on the mountains was a strong indicator that the water was going to be COLD.

After nearly burning my feet in the sun-scorched sand, I hopped into the water and experienced the stark temperature contrast during my two-hour swim in 61 degree water.

Later this month, I’m excited that I may have the chance to go back to Lake Tahoe to cheer on swimmers in the Trans-Tahoe relay. Teams of six swimmers race across the length of the lake, which is 21-miles - the same distance as the English Channel. Here’s to my first California summer in a decade: I finally got the memo that Tahoe is well-worth the trip!
